Brake failure sends school van crashing into divider, 10 children injured in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Sept 18: Panic gripped the Telco area here on Friday morning after a school van carrying children reportedly suffered a brake failure and went out of control before crashing into a road divider near the Bhubaneswar Temple at Plaza under Telco police station limits.

Around 10 children travelling in the van sustained injuries, with three of them reportedly in serious condition.

The injured children, including Diyansh Choudhary, Rohied, Akash, Ayush, Rudransh, Aabhan, Agis, Trishti and Jyas, among others, were rushed to Tata Motors Hospital for treatment. Doctors attended to the injured children and monitored their condition.

The accident triggered anxiety among parents, several of whom rushed to the hospital after receiving information about the incident.

Van allegedly loses control after brake failure

According to preliminary information, the school van, bearing registration number JH05BC-7076, was carrying the children when its brakes allegedly failed near the temple.

The driver reportedly attempted to bring the vehicle under control but failed. The van subsequently veered onto the divider and crashed. The impact left several children injured and caused panic inside the vehicle.

Local residents who witnessed the accident immediately rushed to the spot and helped pull the children out of the damaged van. They also assisted in shifting the injured children to hospital.

Telco police begin probe

Telco police reached the spot soon after being informed about the accident and inspected the vehicle.

Police have begun investigating the circumstances leading to the mishap, including the reported brake failure. The condition of the vehicle, its fitness certificate and other mandatory documents are also being examined as part of the investigation.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the mechanical condition and roadworthiness of vehicles used to transport schoolchildren.

Police are also expected to ascertain whether the vehicle had undergone the required safety and fitness checks and whether all prescribed norms for transporting schoolchildren were being followed.

For some time after the accident, the area witnessed considerable commotion as residents, passers-by and relatives of the children gathered at the spot. The prompt intervention of local residents helped ensure that the injured children were removed from the vehicle and taken to hospital without delay.

Police said further details would emerge as the investigation progresses.
