Ramgarh, Jan. 6: Agargati Sanstha, an NGO working with Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, has succeeded in stopping child marriage in Hethbarga village under the Barlanga police station of the district.

Upon getting information about this, the Agargati Sanstha team reached the village and convinced the family members to stop the marriage.

During this, the girl’s age was verified based on documents related to her age. She was found to be below 18 years of age.

Child Marriage Prohibition Act

The organisation said that according to the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006, the girl must be 18 years of age, and the boy must be 21 years of age for marriage. In case of marriage below the prescribed age, all the people involved fall in the crime category.

It is said that Devi Lal Prajapati, a village resident, was preparing for his daughter’s marriage by arranging it for her at an early age.

A team of the organisation reached the village, met the family members, and told them that there is a provision of imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of one lakh rupees for marrying a boy or a girl at an early age.

The team explained to the girl’s parents and family that their daughter should get married only after she completes 18 years of age.

Kiran Shankar Dutt, project officer of the organisation, said that Agargati Sanstha is running awareness programmes in the entire district with the help of Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation to make Ramgarh district a child marriage-free district.
