Jharkhand: Transport Secretary suggests to focus on design of road to ensure safety

Ranchi, February 13: Transport Secretary Kripanand Jha today said that there is a need to pay attention to the design of the road.

“Sometimes the road design becomes the cause of accidents; hence, roads should be built as per DPR,” he said.

At the National Road Safety Seminar at Hotel BNR, Jha said proper signage should be on the roads. He said there is a need to pay attention to various aspects of reducing road accidents.

“A fitness certificate should be given only after all the checks of the vehicles. All the processes must be completed before granting the driver’s license,” he maintained.

People need to be made aware

Jha said that people need to be made aware to reduce road accidents and minimise the loss of life and property.

“People will have to be made aware of all the road safety rules like wearing seat belts while driving, wearing a helmet, not doing triple riding, and those who break the rules will have to be punished and fined. This will have to be implemented strictly,” he added.

Role of police, health depts

The role of the police department and health department becomes critical in road accidents.

“Trauma centres should remain active so that the lives of the injured can be saved in the golden hour after the accident,” he added.

Engineering, education and enforcement

ADG, Jharkhand Police, Sanjay Anand Latkar said that engineering, education and enforcement are essential in road safety.

“There is a need to implement all these aspects like road quality under engineering, checking the fitness of vehicles, making people aware under education and enforcement,” he said.

Latkar said that there is a need to assess the black spots on the road and reduce them, and also, new black spots should be identified; then, the road accidents and the death rate due to it will reduce in Jharkhand.

Road Safety Cell DIG Dhananjay Singh said that all the departments related to the Road Safety Cell will have to work better. “All police stations will have to keep the phone numbers of ambulances, hospitals, etc., so that people injured in accidents can be taken to the hospital in time,” he said.

Joint Transport Commissioner Praveen Prakash Kumar explained the signage in detail.

On this occasion, Subhash Chandra of Central Road Research Institute, Dr Prerna Arora Singh of Central for Road Safety Management, Nirvana University, Jaipur, Road Traffic Safety Management System Lead Auditor Harpreet Singh gave information about all the aspects related to road safety in the technical session.

Many dignitaries, including District Transport Officers, Deputy Superintendents of Police, and Police and Transport Department officials from all the districts, were present in the seminar.
