Chandigarh, Jan 15: The AAP and Congress have reached an agreement on Monday to jointly contest the mayoral polls in Chandigarh. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would run for mayor under the agreement, while the Congress will run for deputy mayor and senior deputy mayor, according to the sources.

The development occurred when discussions over seat sharing for this year’s Lok Sabha elections were taking place between the AAP and the Congress, two parties that are key parts of the INDIA bloc.

Polls on Jan 18

The decision of the AAP and Congress to form an alliance for the Chandigarh mayoral polls on January 18 is expected to result in a two-way competition. Observers anticipate that the combined strength of the two parties will give them an advantage over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Elections for the positions of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor are scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor seat reserved for SC category this year

In 2022 and 2023, the Congress abstained from voting, which helped the BJP win the mayoral election.

Every year, during the five-year term of the House, elections for the three positions take place. This year, the mayor’s position is specifically reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
