Ranchi, April 16: Retired High Court judge Amitabh Kumar Gupta has been appointed as the new Lokayukta of Jharkhand. The Governor gave approval for his appointment on Thursday.
Born on May 31, 1959, Gupta completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s School in Sahibganj. He graduated from Hindu College and later pursued postgraduate studies and an LLB from Delhi University.
He joined the judicial service in 1997 as an Additional District Judge in undivided Bihar.
Career Highlights
Gupta has served in key judicial positions across Jharkhand, including postings in Dhanbad, Dumka, and Ranchi. He also served as a Special CBI Judge (fodder scam cases) in Ranchi.
He held several important administrative roles, including Chairman of the RRDA Tribunal and Law Secretary in the Jharkhand government. He also served as Chairman of the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JSERC).
He was appointed as a judge of the Jharkhand High Court in September 2013 and retired on May 30, 2021.
As Lokayukta, Gupta will head the state’s anti-corruption watchdog, tasked with probing allegations against public officials and ensuring accountability in governance.
