BCCL committed to reducing coal import dependency: CMD Samiran Dutta

Dhanbad, May 13: Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Samiran Dutta, reiterated the company’s commitment to reducing India’s dependence on imported coal.

Speaking at an interactive session with steel industry leaders on Monday evening at Wedlock Greens Hotels & Resorts, Dutta emphasized BCCL’s alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat by meeting the coal demands of domestic industries.

“BCCL is focused on delivering quality, promoting transparency, and fostering innovation to support the country’s energy and industrial objectives,” said Dutta, while underlining the company’s growing strategic emphasis on catering to the steel sector.

Technological Transformation and Sectoral Shift

Dutta highlighted that the coal sector is on the brink of a major technological transformation. He noted that BCCL is prioritizing the steel industry, which plays a vital role in national development. “BCCL’s strategic focus is increasingly directed towards meeting the needs of the steel sector,” he added.

Coal India Ltd’s Director (Marketing), Mukesh Chowdhary, also addressed the gathering, stating that India’s coal industry is undergoing a pivotal shift. “The essence of Atmanirbhar Bharat lies in meeting domestic demands through indigenous production,” he said.

Chowdhary further noted that BCCL has shifted its strategic thrust from the power sector to the steel sector, offering over 24 lakh tonnes of coking coal exclusively to steel consumers in the current fiscal year.

Dialogue on Quality, Strategy, and Future Roadmap

The session included in-depth discussions on various key issues such as coal quality comparisons, import substitution strategies, and BCCL’s long-term roadmap to enhance supply reliability for the steel sector. Industry leaders and BCCL officials explored how to strengthen collaboration and ensure equitable access to resources.

BCCL directors MK Ramaiah (HR), R.K. Sahay (Finance), S.K. Singh (Technical/Operations), M.K. Agarwal (Technical/Planning & Projects), and Hitesh Verma (GM, Marketing & Sales) were present at the meeting.

Industry-Wide Participation and Auction Dialogue

One of the focal points of the meeting was a detailed discussion on the Tranche-VIII Coking Coal Linkage Auction, aimed at increasing industry collaboration, stimulating competition, and ensuring equitable distribution of coal resources.

Representatives from leading steel companies including SAIL, RINL, TATA Steel, JSW Steel, JSPL, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel, Bhushan Power & Steel, Sunflag Steel, Rungta Steel, Shyam Sel & Power, ESL Steel, Shyam Steel, Uniseven, Visa Minmetal, Smokeless Fuels India Pvt. Ltd., Auroma, Metalite Coke, and Vasudha Coke participated in the session.

Key industry associations such as the Indian Steel Association, All India Induction Furnace Association, Federation of Indian Mineral Industries, and the Coal Consumers’ Association of India also took part in the discussions.
