New Delhi, April 12: Six-time world champion boxer M C Mary Kom on Friday announced her resignation as India’s chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics, citing personal reasons that left her with no alternative.
P.T. Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), reported that Mary Kom had written to her requesting to be relieved from her role.
Her appointment had been announced on March 21 by the IOA.

Mary Kom in a letter to Usha wrote, “I consider it an honour to serve my country in every way possible, and I was mentally prepared for it. However, I regret that I will not be able to uphold the prestigious responsibility and would like to resign, owing to personal reasons”.

“It is embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice. I am there to cheer on my country and the athletes competing in this Olympic Games, with great expectations,” she further stated in her letter.
The renowned boxer, who secured a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, was appointed as the logistical in-charge for India’s contingent in Paris Olympics to be held from July 26-August 11.
Usha stated that she would engage in the necessary consultations and promptly reveal the replacement for Mary Kom. She mentioned having a conversation with Mary Kom subsequent to receiving her letter.
