The work of detection of IEDs in Kolhan forest division, especially in the Goelkera forest range has been begun since October 10 by the CRPF and other paramilitary forces.
A large number of activists of the outlawed outfit, CPI-Maoist, have sneaked into the dense forest area in the Kolhan forest division and also in the adjoining Porahat forest division since the beginning of the year.
To make the forest cover a safe haven for themselves, including for several senior Naxal leaders, the rebels have planted an unspecific number of IEDs and other lethal devices in and around the twin forest divisions, thus giving a challenge to the police and security personnel.
So far as many as four CRPF personnel have lost their lives in carrying out the anti-insurgency operation there, besides scores of others getting injured. This apart, about a dozen innocent villagers have also been killed in the IED blasts.
