Delhi LG nod to creation of 10 new Family Courts in the capital

New Delhi, Nov 14: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena on Tuesday granted approval for the establishment of an additional 10 Family Courts in the capital, bringing the total number of such courts to 31, a press release from the LG office stated.

“The approval affects the creation of posts of 10 Judges to head these Courts and also 71 other posts that include Reader, Steno/ Sr. PA, Steno/ PA, Assistant Ahlmad, Naib Nazir, Orderly and Staff Car Driver,” the official statement said.

The clearance comes after the Full Court recommended back in 2019 that at least ten new Family Courts be established in light of the fact that some cases have been pending for more than five to 10 years.

“Capital to now have 31 Family Courts instead of the earlier 21. Four years after the proposal was first moved in October, 2019, Delhi to finally get 10 more Family Courts to help adjudicate on cases pending for more than a decade,” the press release said.

Approximately 46,000 cases are awaiting resolution in Family Courts in Delhi, with the lowest number, 1321 cases, pending with the Principal Judge of the Family Court in Saket, and the highest, 3654 cases, with the Family Court in Rohini, as per the press release.

The Family Court in Dwarka reports an average daily registration of 150-200 cases, and approximately 80% of the staff in these courts are operating in diverted capacities from various other departments.

“About 46,000 cases are pending in Family Courts in Delhi, lowest being 1321 pending with Principal Judge, Family Court, Saket and highest being 3654 pending with Family Court, Rohini. According to Family Court HQ, Dwarka, there are about 150-200 on the average being registered with Family Courts on a daily basis and approximately 80% staff in these Courts is working on diverted capacity from various other Departments,” the release stated.
