New Delhi, Dec 24: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared Phase-IV A of the Delhi Metro Rail Project, paving the way for a major expansion of the capital’s mass rapid transit system and pushing the network closer to the 400-km milestone.

The approved phase will add 16 km to the existing network and involve an estimated investment of Rs 12,015 crore, with construction planned over a three-year period.

As part of the expansion, 13 new stations will be built, including 10 underground and three elevated stations, further improving connectivity across key parts of Delhi. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility in the National Capital Region.

The Phase-IV A plan includes three important corridors. The Ramakrishna Ashram Marg–Indraprastha stretch will be the longest at 9.9 km, with a projected cost of Rs 9,570.4 crore. The Aerocity–Airport Terminal-1 corridor will span 2.3 km at a cost of Rs 1,419.6 crore, while the Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj corridor will cover 3.9 km with an estimated expenditure of Rs 1,024.8 crore.

Announcing the decision, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Delhi Metro has played a transformative role in the daily lives of commuters and that the new expansion would further strengthen its impact on the city’s transport system.
