THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK
Ranchi, May 9: Dr Bharti Kashyap, a renowned ophthalmologist from Ranchi, has brought international recognition to Jharkhand by presenting two innovative research papers at the prestigious Annual Convention of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), held in Los Angeles, California, from 25 to 28 April 2025. She was the only eye specialist from Jharkhand invited to present her work at this global platform, which drew leading ophthalmologists from around the world.

Transforming Complex Eye Surgeries: One Formula, Triple Benefit
Dr Kashyap’s first research paper focused on patients suffering from pseudoexfoliation—a condition where individuals often simultaneously develop cataracts, glaucoma, and high astigmatism (cylinder power). These patients typically prefer undergoing a single combined surgery rather than multiple procedures.

However, achieving zero residual power post-surgery in such cases is especially challenging due to scarring from glaucoma procedures. Addressing this issue, Dr Kashyap and her team at Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital in Ranchi developed a new calculation formula for selecting the ideal Toric intraocular lens (IOL). This breakthrough allows doctors to perform cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and Toric IOL implantation all in a single sitting—delivering optimal visual outcomes without reliance on glasses.

Astigmatism and Cataracts: Reframing Eye Surgery as Vision Restoration
In her second paper, Dr Kashyap highlighted that nearly 40–50% of India’s population lives with mild astigmatism—up to one dioptre. Traditionally, many cataract surgeries overlooked the correction of cylinder power, resulting in suboptimal vision even after successful lens replacement.

Today, cataract surgery is regarded not merely as a restorative procedure, but as refractive surgery, with the aim of eliminating the need for glasses entirely. Dr Kashyap’s research compared three methods for correcting astigmatism during cataract operations:
- Laser arcuate incisions
- Image-guided manual arcuate incisions
- Toric IOL implantation
Her findings demonstrated that while all three methods significantly reduced astigmatism, Toric IOLs delivered the best long-term results in terms of unaided visual acuity and contrast sensitivity—greatly reducing patients’ dependence on spectacles.
Pride for Jharkhand, Inspiration for the Nation
Speaking at the conference, Dr Kashyap said, “I am immensely proud to have represented Jharkhand on such a prestigious international stage. It was an honour to share our hospital’s work with experts from around the world.”
Her presentation was met with acclaim from fellow ophthalmologists attending from across the globe, many of whom commended the practical applications and impactful results of her research.
Dr Bharti Kashyap’s contribution is not only a remarkable personal achievement, but also a shining example of how medical innovation from smaller regions of India is now influencing global standards in eye care. Her success story serves as an inspiration to aspiring doctors and researchers across the country.
