Beijing, Dec 19: Earthquake has caused huge devastation in northwest China. An earthquake of 6.2 magnitude occurred at midnight in China’s Gansu province and neighbouring Qinghai province.

At least 116 people have lost their lives due to this earthquake, with reports of more than 400 individuals sustaining injuries. The earthquake has inflicted significant damage to homes, roads, and other essential infrastructure. In many villages, electricity supply has been disrupted, and there are constraints on water availability.

Rescue and relief efforts underway

The provincial fire and rescue department has dispatched 580 rescue workers, 12 search dogs, and over 10,000 pieces of equipment to the disaster-stricken area. Relief and rescue operations are underway. The Railway Administration has suspended passenger and freight train services in the earthquake-affected region. Additionally, an order has been issued to inspect the safety of railway tracks. President Xi Jinping of China has instructed all possible efforts to reduce the number of casualties in the aftermath of the earthquake.
