Bhubaneshwar, March 22: Damodar Rout, a seven-time MLA and former minister of Odisha, passed away on Friday morning in a private hospital in Bhubaneshwar.

He was 82 years old.

Rout’s mortal remains will be transported to his official residence at Unit-6 in Bhubaneswar, where his supporters and well-wishers will have the opportunity to bid their final farewells to him.

From 1977 until 2019, Damodar Rout served as an MLA for seven terms in a row, representing the Assembly constituencies of Erasma five times and Paradip twice.

During his time in the Odisha government, he also took up ministerial positions in a number of important departments.

Numerous leaders conveyed their sorrow at the passing of the distinguished Biju Janata Dal leader.

After his passing, the son of Dr Damodar Rout and BJD MLA Sambit Routray stated, “I thought his health was improving but he left us all this morning. We will now take his body to his home, then to the party office and later to his constituency at Kujang, Paradip and if time permits, we will take him to Ersama as well.”

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed sorrow over the passing of BJD leader Damodar Raut in a post on X, saying, “I am saddened to learn about the demise of senior BJD leader and former minister Damodar Raut. This is an irreparable loss in Odisha politics. His work for the service and betterment of the people will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace and my condolences to the bereaved family members.”

ବିଜୁ ଜନତା ଦଳର ବରିଷ୍ଠ ନେତା ତଥା ପୂର୍ବତନ ମନ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଦାମୋଦର ରାଉତଙ୍କ ଦେହାନ୍ତ ବିଷୟରେ ଜାଣି ମୁଁ ଦୁଃଖିତ। ଓଡ଼ିଶା ରାଜନୀତିରେ ଏହା ଏକ ଅପୂରଣୀୟ କ୍ଷତି। ଲୋକଙ୍କ ସେବା ତଥା ଉନ୍ନତି ପାଇଁ ତାଙ୍କ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ ସର୍ବଦା ସ୍ମରଣୀୟ ରହିବ। ତାଙ୍କ ଅମର ଆତ୍ମାର ସଦଗତି କାମନା କରିବା ସହ ଶୋକସନ୍ତପ୍ତ ପରିବାର ସଦସ୍ୟଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି ମୋର ସମବେଦନା…
