THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK
Kolkata, Oct 7: Officials reported that at least seven miners lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries due to a powerful explosion at a privately-owned coal mine in Khayrasole, located in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, on Monday afternoon.
The local authorities fear that more miners could be trapped inside the mine due to landslides triggered by the explosion.
Based on the latest updates, the injured miners, several of whom are in extremely critical condition, have been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

An official involved in the rescue operations stated that preliminary investigations indicate the blasts required for coal extraction were conducted carelessly, without adhering to essential safety protocols, which led to the accident.
The mine is operated by Gangaramchak Mining Private Ltd (GMPL). Eyewitnesses stated that the explosion resulted in the bodies of some victims being blown apart.
Tension has erupted in the area as family members of the miners and local residents have gathered near the mine to begin protesting. Local residents have alleged that the higher management abandoned the site following the explosion instead of taking responsibility and overseeing rescue and relief efforts.
A large police presence has also been deployed to the site to maintain order. The identification of those who lost their lives in the blast is still pending.
