New Delhi, April 17: Harivansh was on Friday elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a third consecutive term. His election came after a motion moved by Leader of the House J.P. Nadda and seconded by S. Phangnon Konyak was adopted through a voice vote.

A total of five motions were moved in support of his candidature before Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan announced, “I declare that Harivansh ji has been chosen as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.”

Escorted to chair in presence of PM Modi, Kharge

Following the announcement, the Chairman requested J.P. Nadda and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to escort Harivansh to his designated seat. The two leaders accompanied him to the chair in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The post had fallen vacant after Harivansh’s previous term ended on April 9. He was subsequently nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu.

PM Modi praises leadership; strong Jharkhand connect

Prime Minister Modi and Kharge congratulated Harivansh on his re-election. Calling it a recognition of his capabilities, Modi said the decision was a “tribute to experience” and reflected the House’s confidence in him.

“We have all witnessed the increasing effectiveness of the House under Harivansh ji’s leadership. He not only conducts proceedings but also uses his life experience to enrich the House,” the Prime Minister said.

Harivansh has a long association with Jharkhand, particularly through his distinguished career in journalism. He served as the chief editor of the Hindi daily Prabhat Khabar, published from Ranchi, where he played a key role in strengthening regional journalism and highlighting grassroots issues. His work earned him wide recognition across Jharkhand and neighbouring regions.

Before entering Parliament, he was known for his contributions to public discourse and development issues in the state. His continued presence in the Rajya Sabha has also been seen as significant for Jharkhand’s representation at the national level.
