House portion collapses during repair in Jamshedpur, major mishap averted

Jamshedpur, June 29: A major tragedy was averted in Jamshedpur on Monday after a portion of an old house under renovation collapsed in Kumharpara locality of Baradwari under the Sitaramdera police station area. No one was injured in the incident.

The collapse occurred while repair and reconstruction work was underway on the ageing structure, triggering panic among residents.

Workers Escape Moments Before Collapse

According to local residents, the house belongs to Naresh Agrawal, who had undertaken repairs to its dilapidated portion.

During the renovation, part of the wall and roof suddenly gave way and crashed to the ground. The loud noise drew residents out of their homes as fears grew that workers or passers-by might have been trapped under the debris.

Fortunately, the labourers had moved away from the section just moments before the collapse.

Eyewitnesses said the incident could have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities had the workers remained near the structure.

Parked Car Damaged

The falling debris also struck a car parked along the roadside, causing minor damage.

Local residents later helped remove the vehicle to prevent further damage and facilitate the clearing of debris.

Owner Says Weak Structure Was Being Dismantled

House owner Naresh Agrawal said the repair work involved dismantling the weakened portion of the building before reconstruction.

However, during the process, a section of the wall and roof unexpectedly collapsed. He confirmed that while part of the structure was badly damaged, no one was hurt.

Residents Stress Safety During Renovation

The incident has once again highlighted the risks involved in repairing old buildings.

Residents urged authorities and property owners to ensure proper safety measures during renovation and demolition work, including barricading the site, adopting controlled demolition methods and protecting workers and pedestrians.

The absence of any casualties came as a huge relief for residents despite the brief panic caused by the collapse.
