Dhanbad, March 13: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has secured the top position in India and 20th globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings for the subject of Mineral and Mining Engineering.
IIT ISM Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra highlighted this as a significant achievement for the institution, acknowledging the relentless dedication of professors and staff. He congratulated them on their contribution to the institute’s progress and global recognition.
IIT ISM Outperforms Other IITs in QS Rankings
IIT ISM Dhanbad has surpassed other IITs in the country in the QS World University Rankings. With a score of 74.7 points, IIT ISM secured the 20th position globally, leaving IIT Bombay at 40th place with 68.8 points.
Other leading Indian institutions in the ranking include IIT Kharagpur, which secured the 45th position with 68.4 points, while IISc Bengaluru, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee all ranked 51st globally.

Centenary Celebrations in 2026
This achievement comes at a time when IIT ISM Dhanbad is preparing to celebrate its centenary in 2026. The institute was formally inaugurated on December 9, 1926, by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India, to address the demand for trained professionals in mining and applied geology.
In 1967, it was granted the status of a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Over the years, IIT ISM has expanded significantly, evolving into a comprehensive technology education institute.
Attaining IIT Status in 2016
The Indian School of Mines Dhanbad was officially conferred the status of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) on September 6, 2016, and has since been known as IIT ISM Dhanbad.
This transformation has further enhanced its reputation and academic excellence in engineering and technology education.
