IMD issues heavy rain alert for southern Jharkhand

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, August 7: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active spell of monsoon weather in Jharkhand, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected to continue over the next four days. In its latest Jharkhand weather update, the IMD has also issued a heavy rain alert for parts of southern and adjoining central Jharkhand on Saturday.

According to the latest IMD weather forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places across Jharkhand on August 7, 9 and 10. The Jharkhand rainfall forecast indicates that weather conditions will remain unstable due to the influence of multiple synoptic systems.

On August 8, isolated heavy rainfall in Jharkhand is expected over southern and adjoining central districts, with Gumla and Khunti likely to receive intense showers. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms and lightning during this period, urging residents to remain vigilant.

Multiple Weather Systems Fuel Active Monsoon

Meteorologists attributed the prevailing Jharkhand monsoon conditions to a combination of favourable synoptic systems affecting eastern India.

The monsoon trough at mean sea level currently extends from Firozpur, Rohtak, Shahjahanpur, Kanpur, Daltonganj and Digha before stretching east-southeastwards towards the Northeast Bay of Bengal, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.

An upper air cyclonic circulation, which was earlier located over northeast Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, has shifted to southeast Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas. The system extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and continues to influence the weather forecast for Jharkhand.

Another upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coast at around 0.9 km above mean sea level. In addition, a separate cyclonic circulation remains active over south Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh between 1.5 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level, sustaining the ongoing rainfall activity across Jharkhand.

IMD Advisory for Residents

The IMD has advised residents, particularly those living in vulnerable districts, to stay alert during thunderstorm activity. People have been urged to avoid taking shelter under isolated trees, remain indoors during lightning strikes and exercise caution while travelling during spells of heavy rain and strong winds.

With multiple weather systems remaining active, the IMD Jharkhand weather forecast suggests that intermittent rain, thunderstorms and lightning will continue across the state over the coming days. While the rainfall is expected to strengthen the ongoing monsoon season, residents should remain prepared for localized waterlogging, reduced visibility and temporary disruptions in low-lying areas.
