IMD warns of thunderstorms, lightning and 75 kmph gusts across Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, June 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several parts of Jharkhand over the next few days, with wind speeds likely to reach up to 75 kmph at isolated locations. The weather warning has prompted authorities to urge residents to remain cautious and follow safety advisories during adverse weather conditions.

Thunderstorm Activity Forecast Across Multiple Regions

According to the latest IMD bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places across much of Jharkhand on June 3 and June 6.

Similar weather conditions are expected over eastern and adjoining central parts of the state on June 4 and 5. Southern and central districts may witness thunderstorm activity on June 7, while south-eastern parts of Jharkhand are likely to be affected on June 8.

Weather Systems Driving the Change

Meteorologists have attributed the changing weather pattern to a trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over east Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh to northeast Tamil Nadu, passing through Vidarbha, Telangana and Rayalaseema at around 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Rain and Cloud Cover Bring Relief From Heat

Meanwhile, widespread cloud cover and intermittent rainfall have brought relief from the intense heat across Jharkhand.

Maximum temperatures in most districts are currently below normal for this time of the year, with several places recording temperatures 2°C to 5°C lower than seasonal averages. According to meteorologists, the cooler conditions are expected to continue over the coming days due to sustained thunderstorm activity and increased moisture incursion across the region.

Risk of Localised Disruptions

While the prevailing weather is likely to provide respite from heat stress, authorities have cautioned that severe thunderstorms may lead to localised disruptions. Potential impacts include uprooting of trees, damage to temporary structures and interruptions in power supply in vulnerable areas.
