New Delhi, Jan 12: As of January 11, official sources have reported that the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 has been detected in 16 states, with a total of 971 confirmed cases of the infection.

Sources state that Maharashtra has documented the highest count of cases for the JN.1 sub-variant of Covid-19, reporting 250 instances, and Karnataka follows with 199 reported cases of the infection.

Likewise, Kerala documented 155 instances of the infection, while Andhra Pradesh reported 94 cases. Gujarat recorded 80 cases, Goa had 49, and Rajasthan reported 30 cases. Additionally, Tamil Nadu and Telangana each registered 26 cases.

During this period, Chhattisgarh recorded 25 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant, while Delhi reported 22 cases. Additionally, West Bengal reported 8 cases, Odisha reported 3, Haryana reported 2, and there was one case each in Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand, as per the sources.

They stated that these samples were taken between November 10 and January 8, 2024.

According to the data, a total of 1452 samples underwent Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) in December 2023, and 1026 samples have been sent for WGS as of the current date in January 2024.

The majority of the cases were of home-isolation, sources added.

JN.1 is a Variant of Interest (VOI) that is being closely studied by scientists.
