Mumbai, Oct 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai, a meeting being regarded as significant on the global stage amid worldwide economic uncertainty caused by US President Trump’s tariff policies.

The leaders discussed a range of issues including trade, security, technology, and education, emphasizing strengthening India-UK relations under Vision 2030. During the delegation-level meeting, both leaders formalized a trade agreement, marking an important milestone in bilateral cooperation.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi announced that nine UK universities are set to open campuses in India, describing the move as a key step in promoting education and collaboration between the two countries.

In a joint statement, Modi highlighted the remarkable progress in India-UK relations. He noted that the previous day had seen a summit of business leaders and that he would be addressing the India-UK CEO Forum and the Global FinTech Festival, emphasizing that the trade agreement will reduce import costs, create new employment opportunities for youth, and boost overall trade.

He described India and the UK as natural partners, with their relationship grounded in shared values such as democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.
At the India-UK CEO Forum, Modi announced that the nuclear energy sector will now be opened to private participation, creating new opportunities for collaboration. He also highlighted India’s rapid progress toward achieving 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030.
This is the first visit to India by Keir Starmer since becoming the UK Prime Minister, and it is being regarded as highly significant. Modi pointed out that Indian and UK naval ships are conducting joint exercises, and Indian Air Force flying instructors are serving as instructors with the UK Royal Air Force.

In the joint statement, Keir Starmer expressed pleasure at visiting India so soon after hosting Modi in the UK in July. He confirmed that nine UK universities will establish campuses in India and noted India’s goal of becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2028, while Modi’s Vision aims for India to become a fully developed nation by 2047.
