Dhanbad, Dec 9: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, addressing the 99th Foundation Day of IIT ISM Dhanbad on Monday, urged students and alumni to utilise their education with the mindset of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—the world is one family—and take responsibility for contributing to a developed India.
The Governor, who was the chief guest at the event, emphasised that the nation’s progress toward development can only be achieved when everyone discharges their duties conscientiously.
Acknowledging IIT ISM’s legacy in nation building
Gangwar acknowledged the significant role IIT (ISM) played in nation-building since its inception during the pre-independence era.

He highlighted the importance of research scholars, particularly those receiving awards, in addressing societal issues and providing solutions for the country’s development.
“You should feel proud to have received education in such an institute with a long history and rich legacy,” said the Governor.

India’s vision for a developed future
The Governor emphasised that the country is rapidly progressing towards becoming a developed India, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has prioritised technical education in the nation.
“We too are working for a developed India and striving for change in society,” said Gangwar, underscoring the crucial role that education and innovation play in this journey.
Praise for IIT ISM’s growth and contributions
Speaking about IIT ISM’s progress, Gangwar praised the institution for its shift from traditional education to fostering technical development that strengthens the nation.
“I am glad to know that IIT ISM is gearing up to produce innovators and social reformers shortly,” he said. Notably, the Governor’s daughters are alumni of IIT Kharagpur.
The Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad was established on December 9, 1926, and was granted the status of an IIT in 2017.
The foundation day ceremony saw speeches from notable figures, including Coal India Limited (CIL) Chairman P.M. Prasad, Durgapur Steel Plant Director Prof. B.P. Singh, Prof. Prem Vrat, Chairman of the Board of Governors, and Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM). Their addresses highlighted the institute’s continued contributions to both technical innovation and societal progress.
