Jamshedpur, July 2: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jamshedpur Branch Office, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, inaugurated the BIS Student Chapter at the IIT ISM campus on Tuesday.
The launch was coupled with a workshop focused on standardization and BIS’s role in India’s quality ecosystem.
Kunal Kumar, Director & Head, BIS Jamshedpur, was the chief guest for the event. In his inaugural address, he underlined the importance of establishing BIS Student Chapters in MoU partner institutions like IIT ISM.

He elaborated on BIS’s mission, the national standardization framework, and the significant role that academic institutions play in strengthening India’s quality infrastructure.

Kumar also highlighted the objectives of the BIS Educational Outreach Programme and stressed the importance of industry-academia collaboration in fostering innovation, knowledge exchange, and the adoption of quality standards.
Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT ISM Dhanbad, expressed gratitude towards BIS and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to the partnership. He noted that several research and development projects are already being carried out in collaboration with BIS.
He also announced the establishment of a dedicated “BIS Corner” in the institute’s library to provide students with easy access to Indian Standards and enhance awareness.
The event also featured a demonstration by Kaushalendra Kumar, Scientist-E, BIS, who introduced students to the BIS portal and shared operational guidelines for the Student Chapter.

An interactive workshop followed the formal inauguration, with active participation from 60 students.
The session marked a meaningful step toward building a knowledge-based standardization culture and deeper engagement between BIS and academic institutions.
