Dhanbad, December 27: Prof. (Dr) Ram Krishna Mahto, former Head of the Department of Microbiology at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH), Hazaribagh, on Saturday assumed charge as the Principal of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), Dhanbad.

After taking charge, Dr Mahto said his key priorities would be increasing the number of MBBS and postgraduate (PG) seats at the institution and strengthening infrastructure in line with academic and clinical requirements.

Dr Mahto is an alumnus of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH), Jamshedpur. A 1990-batch MBBS graduate, he joined the Department of Microbiology at MGMMCH in 2005 and was promoted to professor in 2022.

In 2019, he was transferred to SBMCH Hazaribagh following the establishment of the new medical college, where he was appointed Head of the Department.
The state government appointed Dr Mahto as Principal of SNMMCH Dhanbad with immediate effect on December 24. He formally took charge on December 27.
The post of principal at SNMMCH had been lying vacant since October 2025 following the retirement of Prof. S.K. Chourasia. During this period, Superintendent Dr D.K. Gindauria was holding additional charge as principal.

Faculty members described Dr Mahto as a soft-spoken academician with a strong sense of teamwork and expressed confidence that he would contribute significantly to the development of the institution.
