Daltonganj, December 19: Results of MBBS exams often sour relation between the Medinirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH) and the Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU).

The two indulge in a blame game for delayed sessions, late exams and subsequent late publication of results and sometimes blatant goof-ups in the results.

The principal of the MMCH Daltonganj Dr P N Mahto held his maiden press conference on Friday, along with a battery of faculties and spoke at length on the relation with the university, the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) rules and regulations for obtaining marks by the MBBS students etc.

Focus on Coordination, Not Confrontation

Mahto, right at the start of the press conference, made it clear that the medical college believes in proper and well-meaning coordination with the NPU as its Vice Chancellor (Prof Dinesh Kumar Singh) wants things to be in order and not in any chaos.

“This medical college has a few hundred students while the university has multiple thousands of students. Results matter to all. Some lapses do occur, which is rectified,” added the principal.

The tone and text of the principal of the medical college, Mahto was not of any confrontation with the university but of exploring avenues for better and faster coordination with the university.

“Mila jula kar kaam kar na hai. This medical college can’t go solo. So is the case with the university,” reminded the principal.

An MBBS student has to have 50 per cent of aggregate marks for a 300-mark university exam, which means an MBBS student must secure 150 marks out of 300 total marks to be declared pass.

Here, in the case of the 30 MBBS students of 2022 batch, there was a mix-up of marks and calculations for 50 per cent aggregate of marks.

The head of the pharmacology department Dr Mukesh Chandra Das, taking part in the press conference, said, “There is a crystal clear directive of the National Medical Commission in regard to marks. There should not be any confusion.”

Asked if the medical college would request the VC to allow its one faculty to remain present in the university exam department prior to the declaration of results to which the principal said, “We would like to request but we know there is enough confidentiality and secrecy of the results and we have no idea as to how the VC of this university will be responding to our request.”

Issues with Late Sessions and Exam Errors

Late sessions, late exams and late results of the MBBS courses here in the MMCH Daltonganj have been a bane since 2019, the year this medical college started functioning.

It’s almost 9 to 12 months late session here, which the university is trying hard to squeeze.

The press conference referred to the Thursday university exam of physiology paper 1 of the 2024 batch, where question papers after distribution among the medical examinees were found to be of the second paper physiology instead of the first paper.

Under the directive of the VC this paper 2 was cancelled and paper 1 of physiology was conducted. The error was in the packet numbering for papers 1 and 2.

Library, Facilities, and Healthcare Services

About the books in the central library of the MMCH Mahto said, “We have more than 3,000 books. We are grateful to our Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Health, Ajay Kumar Singh, for his support to us in matters of enriching the library and other facilities.”

About the books, a senior faculty Dr Dewalraju Ravi Shankar told the press that the medical college is tagged to ONOS (One Nation One Subscription) and has an enormous online link to books and journals.

The principal conceded the hospital is sick and sinking. It’s not delivering to the patients. There are deficiencies galore.

However, Dr Arvind Kumar, head of the biochemistry department, told the press that, of late, kidney fitness test, liver fitness test and blood sugar level test have begun in the MMCH. The head of the pathology department Dr Kamender Prasad later showed a list of pathological tests.
