Dhanbad, Dec 24: An angry mob set fire to the house of a rape accused in Jagjivan Nagar, under the Saraidhela police station area in Dhanbad, after the alleged rape of a deaf and mute girl.
The mob’s outrage grew after the police failed to arrest the accused, identified as Ajit Hari, even 24 hours after the incident. On Monday evening, furious locals attacked his house and destroyed it by setting it ablaze.
According to the victim’s complaint, Ajit Hari lured the girl to his house on Sunday evening and sexually assaulted her throughout the night. He released her on Monday morning, after which she shared her ordeal with her family.

Upon hearing the details, the victim’s family and residents gathered at the accused’s house, demanding his immediate arrest. Saraidhela police station in-charge, Nutan Modi, reached the spot, calmed the crowd, and assured them that the accused would soon be apprehended.
However, as Ajit Hari had already fled, the police took his family members into custody to ensure their safety from the mob’s anger.
The mob’s frustration boiled over by late evening, with no progress on the arrest. They returned in larger numbers, stormed Hari’s house, and set it on fire. Although police and fire department teams arrived, the house was completely reduced to ashes before it could be saved.
