Dhanbad, Dec 17: “Knowledge is the foundation on which India needs to build and grow, and you are now part of a community that has the power to make a positive impact in the world through knowledge,” said NITI Aayog member Padma Bhushan Dr. VK Saraswat, addressing the degree recipients of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad.

The two-day 44th convocation of IIT ISM, which began on December 16, concluded on December 17 at the Penman Auditorium. Dr. V.K. Saraswat presented degrees to 183 graduates who passed in the 2023-24 period.

Appreciating IIT ISM’s achievements and advice to graduates

In his address, Dr. Saraswat praised the achievements of IIT ISM, highlighting that since its inception, the institute has been at the forefront of mining education and has consistently expanded its offerings into various disciplines.

He expressed great pride in the fact that IIT ISM was showcased at the BRICS 2024 Summit, demonstrating its global contributions in science and technology.

“It gives me great pleasure to learn that it has been showcased at the BRICS 2024 Summit, highlighting its global contributions in science and technology,” he said.

Addressing the graduates, Dr. Saraswat noted, “The world you are entering as graduates today is changing at an unprecedented pace, and it is essential to stay ahead of the curve.”

Words of wisdom from Prof. Prem Vrat

Prof. Prem Vrat, Chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG) IIT ISM, spoke about the true meaning of knowledge. He said, “True knowledge is not just confined to books or classrooms; it is about understanding life, human values, and the world around you.”

He further emphasized, “Keep learning for education is a lifelong journey. In today’s world, technology evolves at a pace faster than ever before, and staying relevant requires a commitment to continuous learning. At the same time, seek wisdom in values, empathy, and relationships. These will guide you when knowledge alone falls short.”

Prof. Vrat also shared an important perspective on overcoming challenges: “In your journey toward your goals, there will be obstacles, failures, and moments of doubt. These are not signs of defeat but stepping stones to success.”

Director’s address

Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT ISM, provided details on the academic achievements, research and development progress, international collaborations, alumni affairs, and ongoing infrastructure developments at the institute.

He also discussed the institution’s improved ranking in the academic landscape.
