Daltonganj, March 8: International Women’s Day today saw the divergent views of the SP Reeshma Ramesan and the DC Shashi Ranjan.

An impressive function was held in the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Smriti Bhavan where ex-hariya daru selling women now eking out a new and respectable course of living leaving behind their grisly past were present.

SP advocates men’s involvement in women empowerment

Reeshma Ramesan was the first to speak. She said, “I have a few more programmes to attend, and hence I am the opener.”

“My thought process about women empowerment is different. I believe men must accompany their women in such a show. The men are not around. Why? Let men be with their women to know and understand how to increase financial independence,” opined Reeshma Ramesan.

Reeshma Ramesan spoke about level playing field, meaning thereby that women are as a partaker of the opportunities as men, but since men are not with their women, the concept of economic independence is half done or said.

DC discusses mental discrimination among women

DC Shashi Ranjan, in his speech, termed women as more prone to exercising “mental discrimination than others. It’s she against she. The elderly women hardly take along with other younger women. This is sad. It’s unfortunate too.”

DC asked the women if they play any role in making family decisions. There were not many hands of women going up in the affirmation of it that they call the shots in the family decision.

SP Reeshma Ramesan had a word of praise for the Didis who motivate women in distress to seek police assistance.

Caste prejudice raises concerns during event

Right through the function, a Didi rose to tell the DC that as she comes from the lower caste, she is looked down upon, and she is taunted every time that her carrying purse across her shoulder will not bring in any change of fortune.

It was a difficult question to the DC in a public function where a woman openly narrated her predicaments of being cast away from others merely because of the caste she wears.

DC Shashi Ranjan knew his any ultra views here would not be appropriate for the situation and time, so he said once there will be education and awareness among the people such a bias and prejudice will die itself.

DC too, felt the aggrieved woman must have wanted to hear something forceful coming out of him instead of such an academic plea that with the spread of education such an attitude of a human towards another human would perish.

Encouragement to dream big and aspire for success

Reeshma Ramesan urged the women to be down to earth, DC Shashi Ranjan asked women to see ‘big dreams.’ Seeing big dreams is no expensive affair.

Pointing towards the youngest lady IAS officer, Sulochana Meena, who is the SDM Sadar here, DC said, “She became an IAS officer in her 22 years while I got it when I was 25. So dream big, act big.”
