KUMUD JENAMANI

Jamshedpur, June 2: A huge stock of intoxicating substance ‘Doda’ has been recovered from the Naxal-infested Tebo thana area in West Singhbhum, about 180 km away from here on Sunday.

In all 83 sacks of Doda weighing 2100 kgs were seized from near the Chaki River along Paraya village under the Tebo thana area before the stock was supposed to be transported away from the naxal area.

The cost of the seized haul of Doda is estimated at Rs 3.15 crores in the international market.

No arrest

Though the police succeeded in seizing the intoxicating substance by showing the desired alacrity, they could not make any arrests as the criminals indulged in the racket and managed to escape.

The raid resulting in the recovery of such a huge quantity of Doda was carried out by a special police team following instruction from the West Singhbhum superintendent of police, Ashutosh Shekhar.  The sacks stuffed with the Doda had been kept in the bush beside the Chaki River for getting smuggled somewhere else.

Doda is a byproduct of opium

Doda is a byproduct of opium which is produced by processing poppy flowers.  The other byproduct of the poppy flower is Postu, which is a delicious food item.

As poppy cultivation is prohibited here despite being a profitable activity, villagers tend to carry on it in the Naxal-infested areas, expecting that the police will hardly come to know about it given the fact that such areas are not patrolled regularly. But in this case, the police had specific information about the stock of the Doda to be smuggled out and therefore they could unearth it.

This illegal substance is consumed mainly by truck drivers who once consumed tend to drive heavy vehicles on long routes without having to beat their eyelids for hours together.

In this connection, the police have registered a case under the section of the NDPS Act against an unknown with the Tebo thana.
