Dhanbad, April 19: Dhanbad police seized Rs 5.5 lakh in cash from a car on Thursday evening during a routine vehicle search at the DVC Maithon Dam check post on the Jharkhand—Bengal border, around 48 km away from the district headquarters.

Maithon Dam police station officer-in-charge Aakristi Aman told media persons that an SUV car (JH10 BP 2487) was going from the Jharkhand side to West Bengal. At around 5 a.m., during a routine vehicle inspection in the wake of the Lok Sabha poll, Rs  5.5 lakh cash was recovered from the car.

Car rider claims he is a factory owner

The car rider, Binod Yadav, a resident of Kalyaneswary (West Bengal), claimed that he is a factory owner and will pay his labour salary. But he failed to submit proof of his identity. It is said Binod Yadav is a resident of Bengal West Bank of Dam.

“We seized the amount and duly informed the IT cell at Dhanbad headquarters for further action,” said Aakristi Aman.

This is the first time cash has been seized from a car at Maithon Dam check post, which was going to Bengal from Jharkhand. According to the official report, since the notification of the Lok Sabha election on March 16, Rs  55 lakh cash and  33 kg silver have been seized at Digudih check post on National Highway-2 of the Jharkhand –Bengal border.
