Daltonganj, March 1: A tusker guessed to be 45 years old was found dead in the Betla National Park of the north division of Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) today.

PK Jena, Deputy Director, north division of PTR said the tusker had sustained deep injuries in the intra fight with other tusker about 6 days ago, and today its carcass was found.

The carcass was buried after the post-mortem conducted by a team of veterinary doctors. The viscera has been preserved.

It’s two tusks have been dislodged and preserved for record, added Jena. Elephants are not buried with their tusks. Each of the two tusks is a little over 3 feet.

Ranger Umesh Kumar Dubey said the PTR team made all out efforts to save this injured tusker but in vain. This tusker had sustained injuries in the neck. Dubey said the tusker was given medicine-laced bananas for treatment.

Sources said Jena darted to the injured tusker with the help of the T gun.

This is the second casualty of the tusker in the intra fight with other tusker in a gap of two weeks. Earlier, a tusker was found dead last month in the south division of PTR.

Two veterinary doctors namely Farhat Jabbar and Sunil Kumar made tremendous efforts to come round the injured tusker but in vain.

The assailant tusker is a single tusk elephant and is fit and fine, said the ranger Umesh Kumar Dubey.

Dubey said this single tusk elephant had caused severe injuries in the neck of the tusker that succumbed to it.
