Dhanbad, Nov 22: Srinarayan Sharma, a prominent industrialist and alumnus of the 1959-63 Chemical Engineering batch of BIT Sindri, has announced a generous donation of 7 lakh US dollars to his alma mater.
The donation will be used to establish a state-of-the-art laboratory at the institute. Sharma made the announcement during the three-day Platinum Jubilee celebration of BIT Sindri, held from November 15 to 17. He attended the event along with his wife, Vijaya Sharma.
Srinarayan Sharma is originally from Hajipur, Bihar, and currently resides in the USA. He also owns and operates an industry in Hajipur.
Plans for Laboratory Development Underway
BIT Sindri Director Dr. Pankaj Rai shared that following Sharma’s announcement, the head of the Chemical Engineering department, Dr. Amit Gupta, is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the laboratory’s setup.
An expert from the institution explained that a state-of-the-art laboratory is a lab equipped with the latest technology and designed to enhance students’ practical skills while reinforcing theoretical concepts.

Dr. Pankaj Rai emphasized that the lab will provide opportunities for research and consultancy, which will not only improve BIT Sindri’s national ranking but also generate income for the institution.
“The lab will open path for the opportunity of research and consultancy to students. The research work will help in improving the ranking of BIT Sindri among technical institutions of the country and develop sources of income”, said director Dr Pankaj Rai.
Hopes for fulfillment of promise as previous Rs 1 crore unpaid
While the BIT Sindri Alumni Association has welcomed Sharma’s announcement, there are some concerns regarding whether the donation will materialize.
An office bearer of the Alumni Association recalled that Sharma had previously promised Rs 1 crore during his visit to Sindri, but the funds were never received. “Since his wife has now made the announcement, we remain hopeful that this time the commitment will be honored,” said the office bearer.
Sharma Joins Other Alumni in Supporting Research Initiatives
Srinarayan Sharma is the second BIT Sindri alumnus to announce a donation for the construction of a research laboratory on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Earlier in October, USA-based alumnus KP Singh had pledged Rs 1 crore for the establishment of an energy research center at the institution.
