XLRI Jamshedpur celebrates National Librarians’ Day

Jamshedpur, August 16: XLRI Jamshedpur celebrated the ‘National Librarians’ Day’ at Sir Jehangir Ghandy Library on August 14 in remembrance of the 132nd birth anniversary of Padma Shri Late. Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Indian Library Science.

The faculty, staff, researchers, students and library staff members were present on this formal celebration.

Formal function honours late Dr. S. R. Ranganathan

Chief guest Fr S George SJ, Director, XLRI, Jamshedpur garlanded the photo of Dr. S R Ranganathan. Guest of honour Ravi Shankar Shukla IAS, deputy commissioner, Seraikela Kharsawan, Prof. Giridhar Ramachandran, Marketing Area, D.T. Edwin, Head – Library offered their homage to Dr. S R Ranganathan.

A formal function started with a prayer song by Anjali Kispotta, Neha Vandana Minz and Felix Roy. A welcome speech was delivered by Alma Toppo wherein she briefed the career journey of Dr. S R Ranganathan.

DT Edwin highlights growth of XLRI library

D.T. Edwin, head of Library, conveyed the greetings of the day to the library colleagues, ex-colleagues and library interns. He expressed the overall growth of XLRI Library, especially the strategic growth of the library collection, enhanced premium services, and professional and skilful human resources.

He also described the recent achievements and growth of the library like Digital Repository, Research Information System and Digital Archive.

Launch of ‘Summon – Discovery Service’ and Coral – ERMS

S. George, the director, launched ‘Summon – Discovery Service’ and Coral – ERMS. In his speech he said books are the only companions whom one can totally rely on, books are the best friends and reading books is an essential part for the complete development of a person.

He talked about the importance of reading books over YouTube learning, video learning, visual movies.

He said the library is the source of destination of knowledge. Also, he felicitated the library staff members with mementoes and gifts.

New Human Library

Prof. Giridhar Ramachandran introduced the guest of honour Ravi Shankar Shukla, IAS, and remembered his cooperation during the covid period.

Ravi Shankar Shukla, IAS, launched the new Human Library and conveyed his gratitude to various librarians in his life. He suggested that libraries should have subject as well as light reading books.

He also autographed and presented a book titled ‘Covid–19 Governance In India Series – I by Centre for Disaster Management, Mussoorie to Fr. S. George, the director.

D.T. Edwin, Head of Library said that ‘Summon – Discovery Service’ is a unified search portal which allows to search from all the subscribed online resources, provides thick meta data, renders the citation from both Scopus and Web of Science and the Altimetric.
