Jamshedpur, Feb 3: Saista Perveen, widow of mob-lynching victim Tabrez Ansari is to be paid Rs 2 lakh as compensation from the state government shortly.

The Jharkhand Home Department has on Saturday issued a notification to this effect following a recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission which had carried out an investigation into the death of the 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari in Seraikela-based district four years ago.

Earlier, a fast-track court in Seraikela had in July 2023 sentenced 10 accused in the mob-lynching case to as many years of rigorous imprisonment after finding them guilty in the sensational case.

Thrashed by villagers after committing theft

A resident of Kadamdiha village in Seraikela sub-division, Tabrez Ansari was fatally injured in an alleged mob-lynching incident that took place at Dhatkidih village in the adjoining Kadamdiha on the intervening night of June 18, 2019.

Tabrez was caught while trying to commit theft at a house in Dhatkidih village along with two others. The two associates of Tabrez managed to escape, leading him to hide in a bush in Dhatkidih village with a motorcycle the trio had stolen from another village nearby the same night.

Incidentally, on being caught by the local villagers Tabrez was tied to a poll and was thrashed by the villagers throughout the night until a police party arrived at the scene to rescue the thief who was injured.

Succumbed to illness caused by assault in June 2019

The police took Tabrez to Seraikela Sadar Hospital and following a thorough medical check-up, he was forwarded to Seraikela divisional jail on June 19.

But suddenly Tabrez’s condition deteriorated on June 21. He was shifted to the Seraikela Sadar Hospital again on June 22 for treatment. At the hospital, he succumbed to his illness, perhaps caused by the thrashing by the mob.

The death of Tabrez Ansari had drawn considerable attention from the media and also social as well as political circle.
