New Delhi, Feb 13: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill was presented in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, following its introduction in the Rajya Sabha. The session witnessed a heated uproar as soon as the report was tabled, prompting the opposition to stage a walkout in protest.

Despite the commotion, JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal proceeded with presenting the report in the House.

Responding to the opposition’s objections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the government has no objection to including the Opposition’s dissent notes in the Joint Parliamentary Committee report on the Waqf Amendment Bill and asked the opposition to formally record their concerns.

Following the opposition walkout, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until March 10. The second session of the Budget Session will begin on March 10.

Earlier, at 11 AM, the Opposition created an uproar in the Lok Sabha over the Waqf Amendment Bill, prompting Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House until 2 PM within minutes of the session starting. The Opposition was seen raising slogans against the JPC report on the Waqf Amendment Bill.

Rajya Sabha accepts JPC report on Waqf Bill amid Opposition protests

Earlier, the report was also tabled in the Rajya Sabha, where it sparked a similar uproar. The Rajya Sabha today accepted the JPC report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

BJP MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni tabled the report along with a copy of the evidence presented before the committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The Upper House witnessed an uproar following the report’s presentation, forcing an adjournment. However, disruptions resumed soon after proceedings recommenced.

The moment Rajya Sabha MP Kulkarni tabled the report on the Bill, which seeks to streamline Waqf property registration, opposition MPs alleged the removal of portions from dissent notes and began sloganeering.

After months of deliberation, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) submitted its final report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on January 30. The panel adopted the revised bill a day earlier, incorporating 14 amendments proposed by ruling NDA members while rejecting the changes suggested by opposition MPs.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to fundamentally restructure the governance of Waqf boards, which manage properties donated by the Muslim community for religious and charitable purposes.
