Jamshedpur, April 24: The English Department of Netaji Subhash University, located in the outskirts of Jamshedpur, commemorated the 460th birth anniversary of legendary playwright William Shakespeare with a grand literary event on Wednesday.

Held at the Multi-purpose Hall in the Veer Savarkar Block, the event saw participation from guests, faculty members, students, and literature enthusiasts.

The highlight of the program was a thought-provoking lecture by Dr. S. M. Yahia Ibrahim, Head of the English Department at Karim City College, Jamshedpur.

Speaking on the topic “Relevance of Shakespeare in Contemporary Times,” Dr. Ibrahim shed light on the timeless themes, characters, and philosophical depth in Shakespeare’s works, emphasizing their ongoing significance in understanding human nature and moral dilemmas.
His lecture was followed by an interactive Q&A session with the students.
Essay and Quiz Competitions Engage Students
The celebration also featured an essay writing competition on the contemporary topic, “Social Media: Boon or Bane?” Students from undergraduate and postgraduate courses enthusiastically presented their views through a literary lens.
Arunima Ojha (B.A. Economics) secured the first position, Anesha Sarkar (M.A. English) came second, and Jigisha Kumari (B.A. Political Science) took third place.
A quiz competition centered around Shakespeare’s life, works, and historical background was conducted. Featuring rapid-fire, audio-visual, and buzzer rounds, the quiz engaged student teams in a lively contest.
The winners included Nandita Poorti (B.A. English) in first place, followed by Alisha Aiman in second and Monisha Mandal in third.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Avani Sahay, Assistant Professor of English, who expressed gratitude to Dr. Ibrahim, the university administration, and all participants.
The entire event was coordinated under the guidance of Ankita Modak, assistant professor in the English Department.
This celebration served not only as a tribute to Shakespeare’s unparalleled legacy but also as a rejuvenating moment of academic inspiration for students and faculty alike.
The event reaffirmed a collective commitment to literary awareness, critical thinking, and academic excellence.
