Jamshedpur, February 12: The nationwide strike called by a joint forum of trade unions on Wednesday witnessed a strong response in Jamshedpur, with hundreds of workers taking to the streets to protest what they described as the Centre’s “corporate-backed and anti-labour policies”.
Around 800 medical and sales representatives observed a one-day strike and staged a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Protesters briefly blocked the main road, disrupting traffic as they registered their dissent.
Unions Oppose New Labour Codes
Union leaders alleged that the Central Government has replaced 29 existing labour laws with four new Labour Codes — a move they claim has weakened workers’ rights and safeguards.

They further stated that the Sales Promotion Employees (Conditions of Service) Act, 1976 — the only legislation specifically safeguarding the interests of medical and sales representatives — has effectively been scrapped under the new framework.
According to the unions, the new Labour Codes dilute provisions relating to minimum wages, working hours and job security, while promoting fixed-term employment. They warned that this could lead to increased contractualisation and reduced long-term employment stability.
Demand for Government Oversight
Union leaders also called for stricter government oversight of company-imposed targets and performance structures, arguing that unchecked corporate practices are placing excessive pressure on employees.
The demonstration remained largely peaceful, although the brief road blockade caused temporary inconvenience to commuters. Union representatives warned that the agitation would intensify if their demands are not addressed.
