New Delhi, June 25: For the first time in the country’s history, elections will be held for the post of Speaker. While Om Birla will be the Speaker candidate from the NDA, K Suresh has been made the candidate from the INDI Alliance. According to reports, both leaders have filed their nominations.
Since independence, the Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker have traditionally been elected through consensus between the ruling party and the opposition. Elections for these positions are scheduled for June 26th, Wednesday.
No consensus on Speaker as opposition wants Deputy Speaker post
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated that they had informed Rajnath Singh that the opposition is prepared to support the NDA’s candidate for Speaker, on the condition that the post of Deputy Speaker is allocated to the opposition.

Earlier, Congress leader KC Venugopal and DMK leader TR Balu went to meet Rajnath Singh to discuss the post of Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker. When the matter could not be resolved, they left his office.
KC Venugopal refused to support the NDA candidate. He also said that the opposition will contest the Lok Sabha Speaker’s election. He accused the government of not committing to give the Deputy Speaker’s post to the opposition.
On the other hand, BJP MP from Kota, Rajasthan, Om Birla was again chosen as the NDA’s candidate for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post. After that, he met Prime Minister Modi.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that it would have been better to have a unanimous candidate. He also criticised the opposition for imposing conditions and said that democracy cannot be run on conditions. He said that the Speaker does not belong to any party, the Speaker belongs to the entire House
