New Delhi, Jan 28: As per reports, an NIA team may soon visit the US regarding the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
According to sources, following the approval of extradition by a US court, India has intensified efforts to expedite the process of bringing Rana to India.
This step is believed to have been taken in light of the US Supreme Court’s recent decision rejecting Rana’s review petition challenging his extradition to India. The ruling has removed a major legal obstacle, enabling Indian authorities to expedite the process of bringing him to justice.
Tahawwur Rana is accused of assisting David Coleman Headley, the mastermind behind the 26/11 attacks, who conducted reconnaissance of the attack sites in Mumbai.
Rana was arrested by the FBI in Chicago in 2009, a year after the Mumbai attacks, on charges of being part of a Pakistan-backed network. Tahawwur Rana is linked to ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Just a few days ago, the US Supreme Court approved Rana’s extradition to India. During the trial, India presented strong evidence of Rana’s involvement before the court.
The US court found Rana guilty of aiding a terrorist organization and conspiring to carry out failed terrorist attacks in Denmark.
However, while the court dismissed charges related to the attacks in India, it confirmed his involvement in the conspiracy behind the Mumbai terror attacks. As a result, it ruled that he should be extradited to India.
