Kolkata, March 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday formally inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for many connectivity projects valued at Rs 15,400 crores in West Bengal’s capital Kolkata.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s maiden under-river (underwater) metro tunnel located in Kolkata.

The underwater service forms a segment of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section within Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, spanning a distance of 4.8 km beneath the Hooghly river.

The metro service will link Howrah and Salt Lake, the twin cities of West Bengal’s state capital. Three of the six stations will be situated underground. It is anticipated to traverse a 520-meter section beneath the Hooghly river in only 45 seconds.

The Kolkata Metro extension, which includes the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section, introduces the first-ever transportation tunnel in India to pass beneath a major river, marking a pivotal advancement in the nation’s infrastructure progression.
