New Delhi, June 19: India has delivered its strongest showing yet in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with IIT Delhi emerging as the nation’s top performer. Climbing 27 spots from the previous year, the institute now stands at 123rd globally—its highest position ever.
This leap places IIT Delhi ahead of all other Indian institutions and marks a steady rise from 197 in 2024 and 150 in 2025. The institute has excelled across key metrics, ranking 50th globally in Employer Reputation, 86th in Citations per Faculty, and 142nd in Academic Reputation.
Following IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras have also secured top global positions at 129th and 180th, respectively. While IIT Bombay slipped from 118 last year, IIT Madras recorded one of the biggest improvements, rising 47 places from 227 in 2025 to break into the global top 200 for the first time.

India now ranks as the fourth most represented country in the QS rankings, with 54 universities featured on the global list—an impressive 390% rise over the past decade. Only the United States (192), the United Kingdom (90), and Mainland China (72) have more institutions listed.
Of the 54 Indian universities, eight have made their debut this year—the highest number of first-time entries from any nation—highlighting India’s rising prominence in global higher education.
In terms of employability, five Indian institutions have earned spots among the top 100 worldwide in Employer Reputation, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kanpur.
India’s research footprint has also expanded significantly, with eight universities featuring in the top 100 globally for Citations per Faculty. IISc Bangalore ranked a remarkable 15th in this category, while IIT Kharagpur and IIT Guwahati also earned high placements. Collectively, these institutions achieved an average score of 43.7—surpassing counterparts in Germany, the UK, and the US.

Other prominent Indian universities that made the list include IIT Kharagpur (215), IISc Bangalore (219), and Delhi University (328). Among private institutions, BITS Pilani ranked at 668, and OP Jindal Global University placed in the 851-900 bracket, with both maintaining or improving their positions.
The 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings, released by global higher education consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluated over 1,500 universities across 106 countries. The list continues to be topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which has held the No. 1 position for 14 consecutive years.
