New Delhi, Oct 21: Police Commemoration Day is being observed across India today, with special events organised in the national capital and various states to pay tribute to police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Rajnath Singh pays tribute, lauds police role in internal security
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid homage to the martyred policemen at the National Police Memorial in Delhi. He praised the crucial role of police forces in maintaining internal security and described their contribution in tackling challenges like Naxalism as decisive.

“Whether the enemy comes from across the border or hides within the country, every individual standing for India’s security deserves our salute,” he stated while addressing the ceremony.

Naxalism to end by March 2026, says Defence Minister
Rajnath Singh noted that Naxalism had long posed a challenge to the nation’s internal security but is now on the verge of being eradicated.

He said that through the combined efforts of the police, CRPF, BSF, paramilitary forces, and local administration, the number of Naxal-affected districts has significantly declined. He expressed confidence that Left-Wing Extremism would be completely eliminated by March next year.

IB Director recalls 1969 valour in Ladakh
Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Deka also paid tribute to the brave personnel who sacrificed their lives on duty. Remembering the valour of October 21, 1969, he said that on this day, 10 CRPF personnel, led by DCIO Karam Singh, heroically confronted Chinese forces in Ladakh and laid down their lives. Since then, the day has been observed annually as Police Commemoration Day.
Deka mentioned that tribute ceremonies are held at police headquarters, districts, and stations across the country. In Delhi, BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, NSG, RPF, SSB, NDRF, Assam Rifles, and Delhi Police jointly organised a memorial parade.
PM Modi pays tribute on social media
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared a post honouring the sacrifices of police personnel. He said the nation salutes their courage and remembers their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. He lauded their bravery and dedication in times of crisis and need.
Tributes across several states
Across several states, commemorative events were held to honour the fallen heroes. In Gujarat, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi paid tribute at the Armed Police Reserve Parade Ground. In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended a ceremony at the Police Parade Ground in Mumbai, while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar paid homage at the Police Research Centre in Pune.
