Ramoji Rao, founder of Ramoji Film City, passes away aged 88; President offers condolences

Hyderabad, June 8: Ramoji Rao, the founder of the Ramoji Rao Group, Ramoji Film City and a well-known figure in the media industry, passed away this Saturday morning. The 88-year-old took his last breath at Star Hospital in Hyderabad.

According to reports, Ramoji Rao’s health had suddenly deteriorated, leading to his hospitalization on June 5th. He passed away at 3:45 AM on Saturday.

His mortal remains have been taken to his residence in Ramoji Film City, located on the outskirts of the city. His death has cast a pall of sorrow over the film and media industry.

Who is Ramoji Rao?

Ramoji Rao’s name was Cherukuri Ramoji Rao. He was born on 16 November 1936 in Andhra Pradesh. Rao was a businessman as well as a media entrepreneur and film producer. The Government of India honoured him with Padma Vibhushan in the year 2016.

Ramoji Rao was the founder of ETV Network, which is a famous media company. Apart from this, he also ran Ramadevi Public School in the name of his wife Rama Devi.

He was also associated with the film industry. He had a production house named Usha Kiran Movies. Apart from this, he also has a film city named Ramoji Film City near Hyderabad, where shooting takes place on a large scale.

President Murmu offers condolences

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences on the passing of Ramoji Rao.

The President remarked that India has lost a colossal figure in the media and entertainment sector with the death of Ramoji Rao.

“With the demise of Shri Ramoji Rao, India has lost a titan of the media and entertainment sector. An innovative entrepreneur, he pioneered a number of ventures, including the Eenadu newspaper, ETV news network and Ramoji Film City. Honoured with Padma Vibhushan, he succeeded as his vision was essentially rooted in society. His contributions to this industry will be long remembered. My condolences to his family and well-wishers”, President Murmu wrote on X.

Narendra Modi express grief

Narendra Modi has condoled the death of Ramoji Rao and described him as a visionary who brought about a revolution in Indian media. In a post on ‘X’, Modi said Rao’s rich contribution has left an indelible mark on journalism and the film world.

“The passing away of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world”, Modi said in a post on X.

“Ramoji Rao Garu was extremely passionate about India’s development. I am fortunate to have got several opportunities to interact with him and benefit from his wisdom. Condolences to his family, friends and countless admirers during this difficult time. Om Shanti,” he added.
