Ranchi, Oct 6: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Ranchi Sadar Hospital successfully performed a rare left-sided gallbladder surgery on Monday — the first of its kind at the hospital.

According to doctors, the case involved Complete Situs Inversus, a rare condition in which internal organs, including the heart and gallbladder, are positioned on the opposite side of their normal location.
Patient’s Unusual Condition
The patient, B. Badra, a resident of Morabadi, had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for the past three months. Diagnostic tests revealed that she was suffering from acute pancreatitis and had multiple stones in her gallbladder, which, unusually, was located on the left side instead of the right.

Complex Surgery Performed Successfully
The laparoscopic surgery team, led by Dr. Ajit Kumar, took up the challenging case and successfully conducted the operation.
“Such surgeries are complex and demand extra precision, as surgeons have to operate from the opposite side of the usual position,” said Dr. Ajit Kumar, adding that such cases occur in only one out of every 10,000 to 20,000 patients.

Free Treatment Under Ayushman Bharat Scheme
The patient’s husband, Joseph Oraon, a farmer, expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Ajit and his team, saying he could not afford treatment at a corporate hospital. The surgery was performed free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
