New Delhi, March 16: Navneet Kumar Sehgal, a retired bureaucrat, has been named as the new chairman of Prasar Bharati after the position remained vacant for a period of four years.
On Friday, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar led a meeting to choose the chairman of the national public broadcaster.
The Vice President, who also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, leads the selection committee responsible for appointing the Prasar Bharati chairman. This committee consists of the Chairperson of the Press Council of India and a nominee appointed by the President, making it a three-member panel.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju, along with Press Council of India Chairperson Justice Ranjana Desai (retd), also attended the meeting.
An order dated March 15, 2024, issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated, “…the President, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee, is pleased to appoint Shri Navneet Kumar Sehgal, IAS (retd) as the Chairman of the Prasar Bharati Board with effect from the date of his assuming charge of the post for a term of three years or until he attains the age of seventy years, whichever is earlier.”
Sehgal takes over from A Surya Prakash, whose term came to an end in February 2020 when he reached the maximum age allowed for the position, which is 70 years.
