New Delhi, Nov 3: Raghav Chadha, an MP for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was asked by the Supreme Court on Friday to meet with Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar and offer an apology for his alleged behaviour in the House.
On August 11, the AAP leader was suspended indefinitely from Parliament due to allegations that he did not ask some MPs for permission before deciding to include them in a proposed select committee to review the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated that Dhankar, who also holds the position of Vice President of India, should take Chadha’s apology into consideration sympathetically, and make efforts to “find a way forward”.
The Chief Justice of India observed that the AAP MP is a first-time parliamentarian and is also the youngest member in the Parliament.
Shadan Farasat, Chadha’s attorney, mentioned that extending an apology to the Rajya Sabha Chairman would not cause any harm.
Attorney General R Venkataramani informed the Supreme Court that certain developments in the matter are anticipated during today’s meeting of the Parliamentary Privileges Committee.
The apex court scheduled the case for a hearing after the Diwali festival and asked the Attorney General to inform it of any additional progress or updates.
The highest court stated last month that the decision to suspend an MP indefinitely could have a severe impact on the right of the public to have a representative of their choosing.
The top court also queried as to whether the ethics committee could impose an indefinite suspension on the AAP MP.
