New Delhi, July 22: The Supreme Court issued an interim stay on Monday, halting the directives from the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments that mandated eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners.
SC issues notices to UP, Uttarakhand and MP govts
The court sought responses from the Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh governments on the petitions challenging the directive, with notices issued by a bench consisting of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S.V.N. Bhatti.
The bench stated that it considered it appropriate to issue an interim order preventing the enforcement of the directives. This means that while food sellers might need to indicate the type of food they offer, they should not be compelled to display the names of owners or staff members.

The bench scheduled the matter for further hearing on Friday.
No representatives from the state governments were present at the hearing.
Petition was filed by an NGO, Mahua Moitra and others
The Supreme Court was reviewing petitions filed by the NGO Association of Protection of Civil Rights, TMC MP Mahua Moitra, and others who challenged the order.
In her petition to the Supreme Court, Moitra sought a halt to the orders from the two state governments, arguing that these directives exacerbate tensions between communities.
The Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments had issued orders mandating that eateries on the Kanwar Yatra route display the names of their owners.
