New Delhi, Sept 30: The Supreme Court, on Monday, questioned Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s controversial claim that animal fat was used in the preparation of the famed Tirupati laddus. The court called for evidence to support the allegation, raising concerns about the potential impact on public sentiment.

A bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan expressed unease with the timing and nature of Naidu’s statement. Although the FIR on the issue was filed on September 25 and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed on September 26, Naidu’s comments had been made as early as September 18.

The court stressed that Gods should be kept out of politics and said “At least, we expect the Gods to be kept away from politics”.

The bench remarked that it was inappropriate for a high-ranking constitutional official to make such a statement publicly, especially one that could affect the religious sentiments of millions.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was asked to assist the court in deciding whether the state-appointed SIT should continue its investigation or whether an independent agency should handle the probe. The bench stressed that religious figures and matters of faith should not be entangled in political controversies.

Mehta, representing the government, agreed with the court’s concern, stating that any use of contaminated ghee in the laddus would be unacceptable, as it is a matter deeply tied to religious faith.

The Supreme Court also asked for proof regarding the alleged use of contaminated ingredients in the laddus and scheduled the next hearing for October 3.

This case stems from Naidu’s earlier accusation, made earlier this month, claiming that animal fat had been used in the preparation of Tirupati laddus during the tenure of the previous Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government. The allegation sparked a significant political controversy, with the ruling YSR Congress Party accusing Naidu of making baseless and harmful claims for political gain.
