Dhanbad, May 23: Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad has become the third medical college in Jharkhand to have a post-graduate (PG) course facility.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod to admit six students to offer PG courses in the medicine department of SNMMCH (former Patliputra Medical College Hospital) Dhanbad from 2024-25 academic sessions.
Jharkhand has six medical colleges
Jharkhand has six medical colleges and till now PG teaching was only at Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Ranchi and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur.
SNMMCH Principal-cum-Superintendent Dr Jyyoti Ranjan Prasad said he has received an email from the NMC in this regard. “My mission of launching the PG course is completed and will not rest till permission to offer PG courses in other subjects is granted,” said the principal.

NMC rejects PG courses in three subjects
Notably, the NMC has rejected the application to offer PG courses in three subjects, pathology, biochemistry and anaesthesia due to deficiencies of faculty members.
The medicine department has faculty strength for six seats with one Professor Dr UK Ojha, one Associate Professor Dr LB Tudu, and four Assistant Professors- Dr NK Dubey, Dr Abdul Jabbar Ansari, Dr Purnima Kerketta and Dr Nil Kanth.
“With the launching of the PG courses, the institution will develop and patients will get quality treatment,” said Prof ( Dr ) UK Ojha, head of the Department of Medicine, SNMMCH.
Dr Ojha said that the department still requires faculty members as per NMC guidelines but permission for PG courses will be beneficial for students of the state.
Error in NMC letter creates confusion
Error in the NMC letter to the SNMMCH principal has created confusion in the institution for the time being. The authorities have sought correction from the medical college monitoring body.
NMC has issued a permission letter in the name of Patliputra Medical College Hospital (old name of SNMMCH) Dhanbad, an affiliated unit of Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University. In the middle of the letter instead of PMCH Dhanbad, NMC has written the name of MS Ramaiah Medical College Bengaluru for increasing six seats in medicine.
“It is a typing mistake and we have written to the NMC for correction,” said Principal Dr Prasad who has achieved double distinctions of getting 100 MBBS seats and launching the PG course in SNMMCH.
Dr Prasad said the NMC has given permission in response to the reference letter and there is another BMMKU university in the country. So, the permission is only for SNMMCH, he added.
