New Delhi, May 15: The Supreme Court has introduced several fuel-saving measures, including mandatory virtual hearings on miscellaneous days, carpooling among judges, and partial work-from-home arrangements for Registry staff, following the Centre’s advisory amid the fuel crisis linked to the US-Iran conflict.
In a circular issued on May 15, Supreme Court Secretary General Bharat Parashar said the measures were being implemented pursuant to the Department of Personnel and Training’s Office Memorandum dated May 12, 2026.
Virtual Hearings Until Further Orders
According to the circular, all matters listed on miscellaneous days, including Mondays and Fridays, and cases scheduled during partial working days will be heard only through video conferencing until further orders.
The Registry has been directed to ensure timely circulation of VC links, stable connectivity, and prompt technical assistance during hearings.
Judges to Encourage Carpooling
The circular stated that Supreme Court judges have “unanimously resolved” to encourage carpooling arrangements as part of fuel conservation efforts.
Up to 50% Registry Staff Allowed WFH
The Court has also permitted up to 50% of Registry staff in each branch or section to work from home for a maximum of two days a week, while ensuring sufficient physical staff presence for smooth functioning.
Registrars have been asked to prepare weekly rosters in advance. Employees working remotely must remain reachable and report to office whenever required.
The circular also allows Registry officials to modify or curtail work-from-home arrangements wherever the nature of work makes remote functioning impractical.
